C01Fermented soybean hypocotyls and the gut microbiota of older adultsBGN4

Participants and design: 14 older volunteers; 4 g of fermented soybean hypocotyls daily, containing approximately 10⁹ CFU/g of bifidobacteria. Ten days of intake alternated with ten days without intake over 50 days.
Main findings / focus: During intake, faecal bifidobacteria increased markedly and Bacteroides counts decreased.
Scope and editorial notes: The intervention was fermented soybean hypocotyls. This entry follows the source compilation; the full original paper has not been checked.

C02Primary prevention of eczema in infants at high risk of allergyBGN4 / AD011 / AD031

Participants and design: 112 pregnant women enrolled and 68 infants completed the study; double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled. Intervention ran from late pregnancy to six months of age, with follow-up to one year.
Main findings / focus: Eczema prevalence at one year was lower in the probiotic group than in the placebo group (18.2% versus 40.0%, p=0.048). The subsequent TGF-β paper reports on the same trial cohort.
Scope and editorial notes: The source calls 18.2% / 40.0% “incidence”; the paper reports prevalence at one year, not cumulative incidence. The journal is Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, abbreviated as Allergy in the source. The formula also contained AD031 and was studied in mothers and infants; findings do not directly establish effects in BiJoy’s 2–12 age group.

C03Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms in Korean adultsBGN4 / AD011 / AD031 / IBS041

Participants and design: 70 participants; double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled; eight weeks; approximately 4 × 10¹⁰ CFU/day across four strains.
Main findings / focus: Abdominal pain improved significantly more than with placebo. Improvements in pain, discomfort on defecation and total symptom scores were more evident in the normal-stool / loose-stool subgroup.
Scope and editorial notes: The four-strain formula included AD031 and IBS041. It was not the finished BiCore or BiJoy formula.

C04Perennial allergic rhinitis: fermented red ginseng interventionBGN4

Participants and design: 59 participants; randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled; four weeks; 30 in the intervention group and 29 receiving placebo.
Main findings / focus: Nasal congestion improved significantly, some Rhinitis Quality of Life (RQoL) domains improved, and skin reactivity to allergens decreased.
Scope and editorial notes: The paper found no significant between-group difference in the primary total nasal symptom score or its duration score. The intervention was fermented red ginseng; findings cannot be attributed to BGN4 supplementation alone.

C05Long-term study in ulcerative colitis (UC)BGN4 / L. salivarius / L. acidophilus

Participants and design: 60 patients with moderate-to-severe UC; mesalazine compared with mesalazine plus probiotics; two-year follow-up.
Main findings / focus: Compared long-term clinical remission, relapse and related outcomes.
Scope and editorial notes: This study combined a probiotic blend with medication. The blend also contained L. salivarius and L. acidophilus; it was not BiCore or BiJoy.

C06Rotavirus infection in infantsBORI / AD031

Participants and design: 57 participants (28 receiving probiotics and 29 receiving placebo); double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled.
Main findings / focus: Evaluated rotavirus gastroenteritis symptoms, illness duration and viral shedding.
Scope and editorial notes: The formula contained BORI and AD031. Participants were infants hospitalised with rotavirus infection, not BiJoy’s intended everyday population, and the formula was different.

C07Inflammation-related metabolites in diarrhoea-predominant IBS (IBS-D)BGN4 / BORI / AD011 / IBS007 / AD031

Participants and design: 63 participants (32 receiving probiotics and 31 receiving placebo); double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled.
Main findings / focus: Dissatisfaction with bowel habits and bowel movement frequency improved. Seven metabolites changed significantly; relationships between PAME, DOBA and clinical response were explored.
Scope and editorial notes: The formula contained BGN4, BORI, AD011, IBS007 and AD031. Associations between metabolites and symptoms do not establish a mechanism, and this was not a trial of finished BiCore or BiJoy products.

C08Cognition, mood, indole-3-propionic acid and sex-specific immune responses in community-dwelling older adultsBGN4 / BORI

Participants and design: 63 healthy adults aged 65 or over; double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled; 12 weeks; approximately 1 × 10⁹ CFU/day; trial registration KCT0003929.
Main findings / focus: The same cohort generated three groups of findings: cognition / mood, neuroprotective mechanisms involving IPA (indole-3-propionic acid), and sex-specific immune responses.
Scope and editorial notes: These three papers report on one cohort, not three independent clinical trials. The 2021 paper appeared in The Journals of Gerontology: Series A. The population was older adults and the formula contained BGN4 plus BORI.

Participants and design: 22 patients; single-arm before-and-after intervention; maintenance haemodialysis; BGN4 plus BORI; three months.
Main findings / focus: Evaluated the effect of probiotic supplementation on markers of systemic inflammation.
Scope and editorial notes: This study had no placebo control and involved a specific patient population. It does not establish effects in the general adult population.

C10Excess adiposity / body fat management in adultsBGN4

Participants and design: 60 participants; randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled; eight weeks; approximately 9 × 10⁹ CFU/day of BGN4; trial registration KCT0010817.
Main findings / focus: After eight weeks, body weight, BMI and body fat percentage showed no significant between-group improvement. Zonulin, TNF-α and fasting insulin improved significantly, with changes in gut microbiota also observed.
Scope and editorial notes: The study provides biomarker and microbiota findings; it did not demonstrate weight-loss or body-fat reduction benefits. It used BGN4 alone, not finished BiCore or BiJoy products.
